Off Kilter

You ever have one of those days? Of course you do. We all
do.
Things that we take for granted turn out differently than
usual. And they seem to run in packs. Take today for example:
My favourite yoga program was not on tv at the usual time
this morning. It's been replaced. The mailman finally delivered that
delightful used book I've been waiting for for over a month and when I opened
the package, I found that the bookseller sent the wrong book. There was a dark
burgundy face-cloth buried in the white load and now I have pink socks and
towels and tablecloths. I can live with most of the pink, but I'll have to do
something about that bath mat. My email correspondence this morning seemed
okay until I re-read some of it and didn't quite understand what I had
written. I have no idea what was going through my mind at the time.
I could go on. It was one thing right after another. As
though the world shifted on its axis a bit and everything was just a bit off
kilter. Not a lot. Just a bit.
The first thing was a bit of a bother. The second was
annoying. By the third one I was beginning to see the pattern and getting more
cautious - and more curious. By the fourth, it became absurd and by the fifth
it was funny. That's the beauty of having them all gather on the same day.
When they tumble in one after another, I stop expecting things to behave
normally, and then I enjoy how absurd some days can be.
That seems to be the tipping point. Until I see how absurd
the day is, these events are unwanted. But once I find them funny, I start
seeing that the weirdness of the day isn't just about things going wrong, it's
about wrong things going right. Later today, the lady in the insurance office
was nice to me on the phone. I was surprised. She's usually very prickly. That
may not sound like it's much, but she is usually very very prickly.
I start to wonder what energies might be involved in making
a day that is just a little off kilter. The stars lining up a certain way? My
metabolism? Dreams? Has the world shifted a bit? Alternate universe? I don't
have a clue. But some days are just like that.
As for today, I think it'll be a good day to watch for
stubbed toes, to be careful with sharp knives, and to check every list twice.
And it might be wise to wait until tomorrow to send off this issue of Starry
Night. Just in case. For the rest of the day, I think I'll just kick back as
much as I can and laugh at the next off-kilter thing that is bound to come
along.
Stories like these are a regular feature of my free monthly Ezine, Starry Night.
